A Prom Night to Remember
When Mrs. Williams (patient’s name changed for confidentiality), a patient at VCU Medical Center, found out she wouldn’t be discharged from the hospital in time to see her daughter off to prom, she was overcome with sadness and disappointment. Knowing she didn’t have much time left, occasions like this were so important to her.
In the spirit of STAR Service, Mrs. Williams’ nurse, Joelle, encouraged her patient’s daughter to get ready for prom in the hospital room. The staff on the unit made it fun for the mother-daughter pair, like prepping Cinderella for the ball. When it was time to see her off, the staff crowded around and took pictures for the family to cherish for years to come. Everyone wished her well as she made her way out of the unit and off to the dance, trying to hide the tears in their eyes.
Mrs. Williams was extremely grateful for the memory the staff had given her, and spent the rest of the evening sharing her hopes and dreams for her daughter with nurse Joelle, who was happy and honored to listen.
